THE BEST SHAVE CREAM EVER PRODUCED...END OF STORY...was the beginning of the review of the 'old' stuff.  Initial impression was that IF I had not known that this was a reformulation AND did not have a half-jar of the old stuff stashed away (I bring it out on special occasions)...I would have had no clue that I was shaving with something 'new.'  That being said and since I DO know it is a reformulation, I think I am over-searching here but will give these comments:

The cream may be slightly firmer than the old.  The cream in my old jar has firmed-up over time and so I guess I could say that the new formulation is about the consistency of my 'aged' original.  The scent is almost identical dry but when you get the water in it, it is a tad sweeter than the original.  The lather, shave, and aftershave qualities are practically identical.  For my initial shave with it, I lathered up the old stuff first and did one-half of the first pass with it, just to regain a point of reference.  It broke my heart to waste a brush-load of the old stuff and the 24-hour guard who's there to keep a constant watch on it even thought it a bit sacrilegious...but what the heck...in the name of shaving science and all.  My remaining 2 1/2 passes went without a hitch and honestly, with the exception of my impression of the scent...I could tell no difference at all.

As for the rest of the Top Three...

Antica Barbieria Colla...'the queen,' and the closest currently produced 'king of the hill.'

MdC...a very poor third-cousin but head-and-shoulders above all the rest.

***December 27th...the shipments are just beginning to hit and the majority of reports have been fairly consistent with the assessment above as to a slight difference in scent when lathered and similar if not identical shave and aftershave properties.  Also, here's something I found while rummaging the internet that I thought was interesting from the original 'designer.':

The XPEC Original fragrance concept:

XPEC Original was conceived as a fragrance of seductive and individual richness… with qualities of gravitas and power… bold, decisive and very masculine… yet underneath revealing all of the subtlety, sensitivity and charm of the classic English gentleman.

“Cedarwood, Oak Moss and Pepper gave me a very male character as a baseline. Ginger and Citrus I chose for their qualities of Mediterranean warmth. And, to soften and round these characteristics, I wanted to include Rose too since they are my favourite flowers.

Tuber Rose is less obviously feminine, and yet it has a mellow, sensual elegance. Thyme provides a contrast, a balance with the rose and to give an uplift, a feeling of excitement almost of hypnotic intoxication. This is what I felt that I wanted in this new man’s fragrance.

So I mapped out all the words I use to describe this perfume concept, and then placed by each word an essential oil; and presto! XPEC Original was born. This is my expertise – creating a perfumery concept a picture of a fragrance.”

Without a doubt, in our humble opinion, the finest shave cream ever made.

Unfortunately, due the the paraben hysteria, ingredients are no longer

able to be obtained, and so,no more xpec.We are working with the

manufacturer and he is working on a 'breakthrough' reformulation.

Stay tuned.  In the meanwhile, a pic of some  of the retired king...

Update:

A reformulation is supposed to be available around...well now.  We (that would be you...and me) have no idea yet as to what the product will be but from what I understand...all parabens are out and they have been developing some sort of 'new' revelation based upon water...or the specific purity and properties of the water they are using.  All very confusing and really very inconsequential, until that is, we have the opportunity to finally see, feel, smell, and most importantly...shave with the new formulation.  Time will tell folks...time will tell !!!
